If you are starting a new lawn you will have to choose between grass seed or using turf. Using grass seed is a great deal lower-priced than turf and has the advantage that you have a wider range of assorted sorts of grass seed to choose from. The optimum period to start the lawn is in the early Fall or Spring as you require moist and reasonably warm conditions. The summer isn’t the best time to start a lawn as you’ll have to water often and too hot conditions aren’t best for the young seedlings to develop.

Different kinds of grasses grow at diverse rates so the length of time it takes for your new grass to be mature enough to use will be dependant on the type and the blend of grass seed that you use. You’ll also need to look at the kind of grass seed you should use. There are specialized shade grass seed for areas that do not get lots of sunshine, sunny grass seed for regions that do! A very well-liked product is Scotts lawn seed.

Preparing The Site

In advance of seeding the lawn you need to prepare the area correctly. The spot you have selected should be dug carefully and all stones removed and sizeable clods broken up. Rake over the section and compact lightly with your feet. The surface can then be scraped lightly to make grooves for the seeds.

Methods of Seeding the Lawn

There are two approaches used for seeding a lawn, by hand and with a seeding machine. To seed with a machine, weigh out the amount of seed blend needed for your area then put half into the machine and seed by working up and down the section in strips. At the end of each strip, to prevent over seeding, either cover the ground with some plastic or close off the holes in the machine. You might use sticks set into the ground or cables to direct you. At this point place the rest of the seeds in the machine and, working perpendicular to the first lines, complete sowing the lawn.

If you are seeding the lawn by hand it’s best to divide the area into parts of a square meter by means of cord and canes. Calculate the amount of grass seed you require for each section, weight this out and place in a small pot. Make a note of about how much this is so that you will not need to weigh out each time. Evenly seed the first section, scattering the seeds in both directions to make sure that they’re distributed evenly. Now refill the pot to about the same level as before and sow the next segment. Continue until the whole lawn area is done.

When the whole area has been sown rake over gently and water completely.Over the next seven days to two weeks ensure you water on a regular basis if it doesn’t rain. The seedlings should begin to come through in this time.

Mowing a New Lawn

Once the lawn seedlings are in the region of 6 cm tall it is safe to cut the lawn for the first time by using a rotary mower. Carefully gather grass clippings or use a rake and be cautious not to disturb the young seedlings.
