Plan Your Garden Before Planting

Once you’ve set your mind on gardening, you should decide on the type of garden before anything else. Doing a bit of research on the matter you’ll be astonished by the diversity of style and the multiplicity of uses that can define a garden. So make sure you have a clear picture of how you want your garden to be. A few of main types of gardens are: flower, vegetable, herb, and formal gardens.

You can’t grow any type of garden anywhere you like. The choice of plants hugely depends on location and climate, which are two things that you need to consider before starting work on your garden.

1. The type of weather is one issue you cannot dismiss when it comes to what you can grow in your garden. For example, it’ll be impossible to grow tropical plants in Canada. You will have to make do with what you have. That means growing plants that are specific to your type of weather and arrange them in such a way as to make your garden a joy to watch.

2. The amount of time you allot to gardening is normally dictated by how much maintenance your garden needs. For instance, annuals have to be replanted every year, which allows you to create a new one every year. The downside to having this type of plants, however, is that they require a lot of careful maintenance, resulting in more time spent in the garden.

3. You should give considerable care to the state of the soil in your garden  The healthier the soil is, the stronger the plants will be. Also they’ll be less susceptible to plant diseases. There are simple ways to test the soil. Soil that easily crumbles are ideal for growing vegetables.

4. Next you should determine the space you can allot to a garden, and consequently, what plant goes where. Furthermore, you need to establish how to organize your garden. Try to assess the distances between your water source and the plant-beds, or the parts of your garden more likely to benefit from the sunlight, or if there will be any shadowed spots. It may help to sketch your idea.  The more time you spend planning out what you want the better the final result will be.

5. Aesthetic: a garden should have visual composition. Plants, flowers and other statuary pieces should complement each other in the space to create something beautiful.  It would be a good idea if you tried different viewpoints to get a clear image of how it will look in the end.

6. As there are so many variations and combinations, choosing the colors for your garden is the fun part. Knowing beforehand what color scheme you are going to use will give you a good perspective on the appearance of your future garden. However, you really can’t go wrong with any colors you should choose. You might not go for an elaborate design and thus may choose cool or warm nuances, or simply just one color all-around.
