Watching bonsai develop and forming them into amazing sculptures is an absorbing and extremely rewarding pastime. Growing bonsai is not an expensive pastime with few specialist tools needed, but a magnificant bonsai tree can be much more of a centrepiece in your home than many an expensive ornament. A bonsai is a true living sculpture.
Bonsai are container planted plants or trees that are grown to be small versions of its natural sized plant. Bonsai are grown from nearly any perennial wood stemmed trees or shrubs that produce branches and is able to grow in miniature through container confinement with the aid of crown and root trimming.
A Bonsai tree can be grown from seeds, from young shoots lifted from the wild, (please comply with any local laws regarding taking wild plants or trees in your area), or can be bought as ready grown bonsai. Although growing bonsai from seeds is the slowest method, but you do have maximum control of how your bonsai will grow.
Bonsai are grown in pots that restrict the development of the roots but will also enhance the beauty of your bonsai tree. Specialist soils are available that provide the perfect conditions for your bonsai tree to grow in.
Many techniques are employed to shape and give character to your bonsai tree including trimming leaves, wiring, grafting, short term dwarfing and deadwood, (a method of aging bark). Few specialist tools are needed to shape bonsai, and these are easy to come by cheaply. All that you need to get started can easily be purchased from a specialist bonsai nursery.
Bonsai can be had as both indoor and outdoor varieties, some bonsai are best if they are left outdoors during summer and grown inside during the colder winter months.
And for anyone that likes the idea, you can buy artificial bonsai.
If you are considering if growing bonsai trees is for you, I would say give it a try, bonsai trees are simple to grow, take a small amount of your spare time, each and every bonsai tree is unique, and who cannot help but to admire a bonsai whenever they see one.
