Well I live in Greece, and yesterday when i was in my garden i saw a brown butterfly lay an egg on the grass. I did some research an found out then butterflies will only lay their eggs on plants than the caterpillar will later eat. But the grass is not native to Greece so I’m worried that the butterfly made a mistake. I think that the caterpillar will eat grass because the butterfly laid it on grass but i need to know what kind. If you know what some caterpillars of brown European butterflies eat please tell me because i want to be ready when the caterpillar hatches.

Most caterpillars will eat any vegetation, and are voracious eaters meaning the consume large amounts. Caterpillars unlike Humans are not fussy eaters and only a few species will have a limited range of what they will eat, in fact some species of caterpillar eat other insects. You will probably be able to identify what type of Butterfly laid the eggs once the caterpillars have hatched.

The websites below may help you identify which butterfly laid the egg and any information you may like to know.
