I am asking for donation for my eagle scout project and this letter is for my family friends. Your Thoughts?
September 7th, 2009 | by |Dear Sir,
As you may or may not know, I, Brett , have chosen to pursue one of the highest ranks in Boy Scouts. That is the rank of Eagle with Troop 158 of Oak Lawn, IL. One of the main requirements to achieve the rank of Eagle is to successfully plan and execute a service project that benefits the community. My project is to plant a garden in front of the Public Library which will include perennials that attract butterflies. The garden will make the entrance of the Public Library more inviting and hopefully will attract more visitors to the library. To fund my project, I need to raise approximately $2,000 and I am asking if you would be interested in giving a financial donation. I would be extremely grateful and appreciative if you could support me of my endeavors in completing my project. With a donation you will be beautifying the town of Oak Lawn and making it community to be proud of. The project is planned for the end of September / early October 2008. If you have any questions or comments about my Eagle Project or are considering a donation, please feel free to call me at (***) ***-**** or email me at *********@yahoo.com. I would be more than happy to review my project in more detail with you. Thank you for your time and consideration of supporting my Eagle Scout project. I also encourage you to come out and see for your self the finished project when it is completed. Please respond ASAP because I am trying to plant the garden before fall.
Your Generosity is Greatly Valued,
Yours in Scouting,
Brett

Brett, Congratulations, you have already gone farther in Scouting than many many others. It was not easy getting this far and the experience will make you a better adult, this too will benefit your community.
In my profession (I manage a Florida State Park) we have recieved many eagle projects for the park; these construction projects and interpretive efforts by many boy and girls scouts made improvements we could not afford with our limited budget. This is something you should mention, especially in the light of recent economic downturn.
The donations you receive will be effective advertising for your sponsors, explain to donators how you plan to promote their business by your efforts.
I have been to numerous Eagle Ceremonies (sadly not my own and I am envious of your dedication ) There are many civic officials in attendance and more presentaions from some highly regarded indiviuals. Most people know what it takes and you should get support.
Try to break your letter into paragraphs and maybe change some phrasing.
Some examples….
“As you may or may not know, I am about to attain the highest honor in Boy Scouts, the rank of Eagle. As part of Troop 158 of Oak Lawn, IL., I have the promise of their volunteer help and that of my family to get reach this pinnacle and for that I thank everyone.
One of the main requirements to achieve the rank of Eagle is to successfully plan and execute a service project that benefits the community. My project is to plant a garden in front of the Public Library which will include perennials that attract butterflies. This will illustrate the role of pollinators and the need for host plants, a relationship in nature similar to our community. That will make it a teaching garden.
The garden will make the entrance of our Public Library more inviting and hopefully will attract more diverse visitors to the library. Now to make this project a reality, it will take approximately two-thousand dollars. I am asking if you would be interested in giving a donation. We can use cash donations to purchase what we need, In addition, we would be happy to accept materials from your business. I would be extremely grateful and appreciative if you could support me of my endeavors in completing my project. With a donation you will be beautifying the town of Oak Lawn and making it community to be proud of.

GOOD LUCK and WAY TO GO!

Check about this first- I am not sure you can solicit donations for your project like this, I believe it is a violation of the BSA fundraising guidelines.
