Do butterflies need water?

I am keeping one beautiful butterfly which I found it in my garden. I was monitoring it from a cocoon to now what it is. But then it couldn’t fly due to some birth defect. It was quite a pity, because it had no reason to die. So I decided to save this small creature in a container with a 1-by-1cm air hole. I also put in some curry leaves for food source because it was eating my curry leaf plant. My question is, do I need to give the butterfly water? Do they go on a nectar instead of water? What would be a appropriate source of nectar then? Please reply a.s.a.p. before something really goes wrong. Thanks!

you have however tried your best well done for that and yes it will need water but usually it comes in dew drops and nectar comes from bloom in the middle of flowers. The air hole is not enough. remember they live on the outside not the inside. Does the butterfly come from a land where curry leaves are grown if not then give it something from it’s country. or you would be better off leaving it out side to fully develop or be eaten in the chain. although it must have been desperate to eat your curry leaves. It surely doesn’t need a container if it doesn’t fly, try to put yourself in its shoes.

They might live from the moisture in the food.

You shouldn’t have kept the chrysalis. The butterfly couldn’t fly because it hasn’t fully dried its body because you kept it. Butterflies’ food is nectar from flowers. It will eventually die if it cannot eat. Next time don’t keep chrysalis, they have to be in the place where they are likely to fully develop. You can keep a butterfly when it is fully grown or you can have a dome cage covering your garden to keep the butterflies in.
